Rutgers Visual Identity System
Web Standards
Note that we are currently in phase one of the redesign of the core Rutgers’ website. These templates and guidelines may be revised in fall 2008. If you plan to rebuild your website, we encourage you to use the Rutgers Cascading Style Sheet website templates.

The web standards have been expanded. You now have three available options to apply the identity to your website:

  1. Use the minimum identity requirement for a university website. Place the Rutgers logotype in the top left corner of the live content area on every webpage. Note that with the exception of navigation, content is not permitted in the immediate vicinity of the logotype. See page 2.12 of the Visual Identity Manual [PDF–10MB] for detailed information on surrounding space restrictions.

The minimum size of the Rutgers logotype is 120 pixels wide, with a 20-pixels wide border of clear space around the logotype.

The minimum width of the logotype with signature is 150 pixels wide, with a 28-pixels wide border of clear space around the logotype.

Note: The use of the informal seal as a web graphic diminishes its resolution and makes the details of the seal appear fuzzy. Therefore, it is not recommended that you use it as a stand-alone web graphic or in combination with the logotype. The best way to use the informal seal on the web is as a background element or watermark in a web banner.

  2. Use the web banner system created by University Relations' Creative Services. These files were especially designed for existing websites and contain the Rutgers logotype. They can be downloaded or requested if the banner you need is not available.

See pages 6.4–6.9 of the Visual Identity Manual [PDF–10MB] for more information.

  3. Use the web templates provided by University Relations' Creative Services.

Note: These elements may not be resized or altered unless approved by Creative Services.

Every university webpage should contain the following navigational items:

1. Search Link
Each site's main webpage should include a link to "Search Rutgers" at http://search.rutgers.edu.

2. Campus and/or Universitywide Home Page Links
Each site's main webpage should have an easily identifiable link to their campus home page and/or the universitywide home page at http://www.rutgers.edu.

3. Webpage Footer
Each webpage's footer should contain the phrase "Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey."

Available Website Elements
In addition to the logotypes and signatures, other website components such as web banners, web bars, webpage templates, and favicons are available to download. Other web elements are available by request.
