A logotype is a logo composed of text. In our case, it is the word "Rutgers." The Rutgers logotype is the primary element of the Rutgers Visual Identity System and must appear on all Rutgers communications. It may not be modified in any way. Using the logotype alone is the preferred way to represent the university.
However, when greater definition is needed, an approved signature line or the informal seal can be added to the logotype. This will fall into one of the following categories:
Don't Forget to Use the Full Name of the University
Keep in mind that the full name of the university—Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey—must appear somewhere on all Rutgers communications. Several ways to satisfy this requirement include:
- In print, using the full name of the university in your opening text
- In print, using the full name of the university in a return address
- On the web, using the full name of the university in the page footer
- Using the state university signature
- Using the Rutgers logotype with the informal university seal

(Not recommended for digital use)
For usage guidelines regarding the university name, see the Rutgers Editorial Style Guide.
Using the Logotype and Signatures
Many of the logotypes and signatures are available to download. They may not be altered in any way.
